November 2025 Spotlight
Kenya Castillo: First year master's student, Dr. Leach Lab
About you: I’m Belizean and excited to be part of this year’s graduate student cohort. I enjoy exploring new trails and watching sunsets (there’s something about nature that always helps me reset) and I'm always up for new adventures. I’m a big foodie who loves trying dishes from different cultures and admire the stories they tell through their flavors. Dark chocolate is my favorite indulgence. When I can, I love to travel (if I ever won the lottery, you’d probably find me eating my way around the world). While I tend to keep a low profile, I see this new chapter as part of my growth, learning to share my journey and connect with others along the way.
Research: I’m interested in applied research on integrated pest and pollinator management in specialty crops. My goal is to explore sustainable solutions that growers can realistically adopt to support both productivity and environmental health.
Get to know you more!
What skill would you most like to learn?
I’d like to improve my leadership and communication skills, they’re both so important for building confidence and helping others.
What makes you happiest?
My two nieces bring me so much joy. Watching them grow and hit new milestones reminds me to appreciate small moments. And of course, chocolate desserts, especially dark chocolate bars, never fail to make me smile.
What is the best advice you’ve ever received?
“When you walk into a room and feel out of place, remember that God placed you there.” That reminder helps me stay grounded and open to learning, even when I don’t have all the answers.
What’s your best study tip?
The Pomodoro Technique: 25-minute study sessions followed by 5-minute breaks. It keeps me focused and prevents burnout.
